Summary:
This is a portable charger born on Kickstarter that introducing a design that allows you to carry a portable battery in your wall adapter. There are a few like this I have seem and I may post some reviews of others but the concept is pretty simple. You start with a wall adapter and you add in some Lithiun cells. When ever the unit is plugged in you can use it as a normal wall adapter, but when you leave you take it with you and you can continue to plug into it to get a charge even if its not plugged into the wall. Its a really great concept.  That said, while i think Flux Mob really nailed the design with this version, i think they missed the boat on the performance or functionality. The unit itself seems fine, but based on the test results it seems they may have used rather poor lithium cells, and for the price i would be expecting much better. These units retail for $60, and in a recent review i just did of a higher end PowerX you are getting over 3 times the capacity at the same price not to mention the super charging speed the PowerX delivers, and the same can be said for numerous batteries. I’m just not sold that the extra cost is worth the perceived convenience of having the battery built into the wall adapter.

As with all of our tests lets get into the nitty gritty details and see why this battery may not be the perfect solution for all those mobile users out there.

Summary: The Zettaly PowerX (Formerly ThinkPower) is a new Kickstarter born battery pack with a different take on portable power. There are already hundreds or different models thousands of units on the market today and most of them share one common thing, they are almost all USB based. They charge devices over USB cable and the unit itself is charged over USB. Zettaly has taken a different look at the portable battery. Providing a common sized 10,000 mAh unit but instead of focusing on fancy displays or super high capacity, here the focus is on charging fast.  The device was originally named ThinkPower to pay homage to the popular ThinkPad brand laptops it shares a charger with, but they ultimately renamed the product to PowerX it in order to avoid a potential trademark dispute with Lenovo. On Their Kickstarter campaign page they state the have a good existing relationship with Lenovo, so i can see where this decision makes sense. As alluded to, this battery is designed to be charged from the high power 45W and greater Lenovo brand chargers. What this does, is allow this unit to be charged from 0% to 100% in roughly 90 minutes. The same sized battery being charged with a high powered USB cable would easily take half a day to charge (10-15 hours). In some cases my unit was charged in under 90 minutes. This is truly wonderful for those ThinkPad users that want to carry a portable battery. you will never go without a charge. During the Kickstarter campaign Zettaly provided me with a pre-production unit to do my testing with and and I found that the rapid charge claims are spot on.  The overall output of the battery is about average for this type, hopefully the final units will be tuned a but more. I will cover all of the details after the break. At the time of this writing the PowerX battery is still trying to raise funding on the popular crowdfunding website Kickstarter in order to bring this unit to market,  and i for one hope it is successful.

Summary:
TYLT Keeps its reputation going with the Energi 5K+. This  Power Bank achieves overall high performance testing scores while still being a useful and portable all-in-one charger. The Energi 5K+ comes with 2 built in cables giving you both Micro USB and Lightning connections at all times, this is the main difference and advantage over the TYLT Energi 5K, which only has a single built in Micro USB cable.

As with most premium portable batteries you are going to drop a bit more money into it, but you are getting a high quality product and with its built in cables, its truly a flexible well rounded device. While i think the retail price is a bit steep, if you are able to get this on sale, I’m sure this device will serve your short term charging needs for years to come.

The device itself is nice if you want a decent stand up dock for your iDevice. It woks fine with the smart cover since but thicker cases may prevent it from seating properly. Some nice features are that is has “auto-on” so the iPad starts charging as soon as its docked, no need to press a button. It also has pass-thru charging allowing you to always keep the dock plugged in. it will charge the device and or the internal battery as needed. The main complaint is the battery itself. Being advertised for the iPad the 5200mAh battery is already pretty small. The iPad has an internal battery of over 11,500 mAh (3rd Gen).
The internal battery is proving to be about 60% efficient in my numerous controlled tests, showing that you get an effective output of about 3100mAh. This would get you roughly a 25% charge to a dead iPad
