Summary: The Zettaly PowerX (Formerly ThinkPower) is a new Kickstarter born battery pack with a different take on portable power. There are already hundreds or different models thousands of units on the market today and most of them share one common thing, they are almost all USB based. They charge devices over USB cable and the unit itself is charged over USB. Zettaly has taken a different look at the portable battery. Providing a common sized 10,000 mAh unit but instead of focusing on fancy displays or super high capacity, here the focus is on charging fast.  The device was originally named ThinkPower to pay homage to the popular ThinkPad brand laptops it shares a charger with, but they ultimately renamed the product to PowerX it in order to avoid a potential trademark dispute with Lenovo. On Their Kickstarter campaign page they state the have a good existing relationship with Lenovo, so i can see where this decision makes sense. As alluded to, this battery is designed to be charged from the high power 45W and greater Lenovo brand chargers. What this does, is allow this unit to be charged from 0% to 100% in roughly 90 minutes. The same sized battery being charged with a high powered USB cable would easily take half a day to charge (10-15 hours). In some cases my unit was charged in under 90 minutes. This is truly wonderful for those ThinkPad users that want to carry a portable battery. you will never go without a charge. During the Kickstarter campaign Zettaly provided me with a pre-production unit to do my testing with and and I found that the rapid charge claims are spot on.  The overall output of the battery is about average for this type, hopefully the final units will be tuned a but more. I will cover all of the details after the break. At the time of this writing the PowerX battery is still trying to raise funding on the popular crowdfunding website Kickstarter in order to bring this unit to market,  and i for one hope it is successful.

This product review is based on a pre-production unit.  If i get a final version i will revise the review if needed.

Product Details
Battery Model: ZBL-426R
Rated Capacity: 10,000 mAh
Output ports: 2 USB (1A/2.1A)
Input Port: 1 20VDC 3.25A /4.5A

Battery Features:

Lenovo Laptop charger input

Lenovo Laptop charger input

Ports: The battery has the common 2 USB output ports rated at 1A and 2A (2.1A). While most new batteries on the market today are starting to combine these into 2 ports that are both rated at 2.4A with a feature that auto-senses what is needed and adjusts the output accordingly. The setup on this battery is good, and while this is a pre-production unit it may stay int he final design or be revised. either way you will still be able to charge the devices you need and it still performs well. On the input side is where this battery really shines. As noted int eh summary, this battery is designed to work with the newer Lenovo ThinkPad laptop chargers 45W and higher. For my testing i used my 95W charger and it was just amazing to see a 10,000 mAh batter charged in 80-90 minutes. This also allowed me to complete my testing a lot faster because i didn’t have to wait a day between tests so it could charge. This battery charges in about an hour and a half where normal batteries of this size will take 10-15 hours to charge. you can see the obvious benefit for travelers that need portable power. While this current version is catering to Lenovo users, i do believe Zettaly has the intent to expand the line to include units compatible with other types of laptop chargers.

LED Display: Unlike most batteries that just have a set of 4-5 indicator lights this device has a small LED display that will show the % of charge it has both during a charge and discharge cycle, it will indicate if its using the 1A or 2.1A output, and if you hold the button on the side down for 1-2 seconds it will display the actual output current of the battery. When the battery is in a charge cycle in addition to displaying the charge % amount it will also display the rate in which its charging. You will see the device start to charge at about 7.5x speed and then when you get to the last couple % it will start to taper off as it tops the lithium cells off in just under 90 minutes time.
Auto-on: This battery does feature Auto-on charging. This is a feature common on many similar batteries where it automatically starts to charge the device as soon as the USB port is plugged into the battery. Some may prefer this others may not, preferring to manually control the on/off state of the unit, While i like the Auto-On feature, this is a matter of personal choice. I find Auto On to be incredible useful when storing the battery away and keeping just the cable exposed as one may do with a purse, backpack or other bag.
Pass-thru Charging: This is a nice feature that allows the battery itself to be charged while also delivering a charge out to another device that is connected, this batter pack also has this feature which can also be super convenient. There are numerous occasions when this feature can be helpful and none that i can thing of where its a hindrance.

Device Finish:

PowerX Pass thru charging

PowerX Pass thru charging

The device comes in a matte black finish that seems to be taken after the same type of finish on my own Thinkpad. Its a nice finish and its the same i have seen on a few other types of battery packs such as the Blast line form Limefuel. Overall its a good solid case and finish but this specific finish does let to leaving fingerprints and other marks with heavy use. The pre-production unit i have has white USB ports but i was informed the final production unit is being designed with black USB ports to give a more clean look.

Prelimenary Power X Test Results (Pre-Prod Unit)

This battery rates well, a bit below average for a 10,000 mAh unit but overall not bad. As this is a pre-production unit its completely possible the efficiency may increase slightly int he final version. However i have not been given any specific info about this. Normally in the amount of time i have had with the battery i would not have been able to complete very many test cycled, but because it charges so fast i have got most of my tests done. In the tests i have completed so far the battery has an average output rating of 61%. As you can see this average was brought down a bit by a couple of low tests. To interject an opinion, I feel that that the battery is likely to perform closer to 63 or 64% more often, but lets move on from that. This means that you can, on average, expect to get about 6,064 mAh of actual juice from this 10,000 mAh battery. In its best test, 64%, You would get 6,367 mAh, and it’s lowest about 59% you can expect about 5,908 mAh. Now lets put this into terms that many end users can relate to. This means that, on average, you can expect this battery to give your iPad (gen 2/3/4) about half a charge (53%) if it’s totally dead. You Galaxy S3 will get about 2.8 charges, Galaxy S4 will get about 2.3 charges. If you are an iPhone user your iPhone 5 can expect to get about 4.2 charges, and for the newer iPhone 5s/5c you can expect about 3.9 full charges.

August the 5th Zettaly has started a kickstarter campaign for getting their new product “Power X” funded. All went well and they were quite successful, finishing their project and sent out their products. After a few times using, the Power X doesn’t function anymore (only showing an E) and so the story began..

After numerous mails, pm’s on kickstarter, requests for callbacks, facebook messages and twitter: No support at all.. They have deleted their account on Kickstarter, removed every link about the Power X on their website! They have read my messages, because the account they used for kickstarter has a last login on 31 of October ( I checked daily). So they chose to ignore a backer (one of the guys that helped you guys starting a business and mass produce a product)..

So the question is: Are you ready for buying a product with an unreliable company as Zettaly and ignoring you as a customer? When you want to buy something, they are responsive and everything; after that they give you a big screw you!
